Here's what I've seen in a movie theatre lately, and what I think of it. You can click on any logo to get back to the top of the page.
Now this
one is weird, but very funny. The moaning of some mainstream-movie-preferring
people in the audience was almost as funny. Antonio Banderas like you never seen
him before. And Quentin Tarantino acts like he directs.
See it and
forget it. At least I supported one of the smaller cinemas in town...
A movie about young
people in New York. I hope it's not a documentary feature, but then it probably
is... Freightning stuff.
On
one hand I had to recommend this movie to my sister, since there's a B.B. King
song in it, but then, she does not really like brutal films, and Casino
definitely is one of them. I really liked the performences of Robert DeNiro
(brilliant as usual), Joe Pesci (must have changed all his OKs
from the Lethal Weapon sequels to Fuck and at least
trippled it) and Sharon Stone (yes, she can act).
I already
mentioned the soundtrack before. A brilliant compilation by Robbie Robertson,
including songs by Fleetwood Mac,
The Moody Blues, The Rolling Stones (at least 10
songs of them).
Casino's running time of over 3½ hours truely made this
March the month of the long films (with Sense And Sensibility, Heat and Nixon).
I liked it.
It's
a funny movie, but sometimes a bit long. Excellent acting; I really liked Alan
Rickman (I always do, e.g. in Die Hard or Robin Hood - Prince Of
Thieves). Unusual role for Hugh Grant, ending of the movie as I expected.
OK, OK, I finally
got convinced to see this one. It was better than expected... But 7 Oscar
nominations? Good mixture of special effects and animated models, and sometimes
quite funny.
I had
great expectations for this movie. I mean John Woo and John Travolta. Not to
forget Samantha Mathis and Christian Slater, which has been a perfect
combination in
Pump Up The Volume. But then Broken Arrow turned out to be yet
another Seagal-style movie... Good action, some nice special effects, but a
story with too many gaps and loose ends...
What can you expect,
when Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino are in the same movie? Only the best. And
that's what I think you get when you see Heat. It's more than Gangster/Cop
movie, the two are more than just good guys and bad guy.
I read
something about Myst being redone as a movie. Jumanji
therefore is the opposite of that. It's the movie for an adventure game. Robin
Williams said that this is as close to an action movie as he would get. Could he
get any closer? Special effects were brilliant, although I think that the makers
of Jumanji should have used more models of animals, since their computer-created
animals weren't that good after all. Actors and story were really of my kind.
Highly recommended.
Good
thriller, altough as seen many times before, but Never Talk To Strangers
proofes that it's still possible to create a surprisingly good ending.
Another
movie I really liked. Brilliant story with and ending that makes you want to see
the movie again. At least I plan to do so. The only question that remains is:
Who is Kaiser Sose?
I always
liked the movies of Katherine Bigelow. So there was no argueing about going to
see Strange Days. The movie shows the last two days of the year 1999 (I don't
call it the end of the century, since I'm sure it ends a year later, but that's
another discussion...), and it's not a nice-looking future as in Demolition Man.
I would rather compare it with Soylent Green...
To put it shortly: I've seen
the movie twice, bought the soundtrack CD and I will go see the next movie of
Katherine Bigelow without hesitating.
This was yet
another surprise movie. I really begin to like this monthly event in Berne. I
didn't expect much of it. What can you expect of a story that is so well-known
that you never expect to be surprised. But then it turned out to be a brilliant
movie. Good actors (but no third Oscar in a row for Tom Hanks, I guess...).
State-of-the-art special effects, pictures, directing... Everthing's first-rate.
Watching this
movie, I kept thinking: does it ever start? There were several good lines
between Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson. But is this enough? The last 15
minutes eased the waiting a bit. This ending makes Speed kind of a slow movie.
But is it worth waiting for?
